A Brief History

Zirka translates from Ukrainian to "Star" and our dazzling performances prove they live up to the name. Since our inception in 1972, the main goal of Zirka has been to preserve and promote the rich Ukrainian heritage through Ukrainian dance and authentic costumes from the various regions of Ukraine.

The desire to preserve the art and practice of Ukrainian dance prompted the creation of a small group of dancers who performed with Canada's National Ukrainian Festival Choir in the spring of 1972. By the fall of 1972, 99 students registered to take instruction in Ukrainian dancing. Instructors were Jerry Dutchyshen, Larry Hrytsay, and Pat Showdra. The group set up and Executive board comprised of parents and adopted the name "Zirka". A school of dance was established for children aged 7 and up.

Within the first few years, the group developed a repertoire of regional dances, sewed costumes to represent the regions, and participated in many workshops to increase the skill level of the dancers. By 1977 the dance repertoire consisted of dances from the Poltava, Bukovenia, Hutzul, and Lemke regions.

With the skill level of the troupe increasing, demand for their performance increased from local venues to ones across the border and the country. By 1975, Zirka had performed in various locations in the United States, primarily for the Wally Bayan organization. In 1985 Zirka performed for the first of three times at the Festival by the Sea in New Brunswick. They were also honored to be chosen to perform at the Expo '86 in Vancouver. In 1991, a long time dream of the group was fulfilled with a three week tour of Ukraine, which included performances and workshops throughout the country. Zirka has also performed at the Epcot Center in Walt Disney World.

The ensemble has had opportunity to perform for many local events and were thrilled to be able to perform for her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II as well as many other dignitaries. The Zirka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble continues to be highlight performers at the annual Canada's National Ukrainian Festival held yearly in Dauphin, Manitoba. The junior school of dancing also takes pride in performing for as many functions as they are able to and are proud to display their skills. The school of dance takes the opportunity to compete at least one dance competition yearly, and Zirka has hosted a dance competition bi-annually.
Zirka continues to expand its repertoire of dances and its costuming inventory. Over the past few years, the school has participated in various workshops developing regional choreography, dance technique and new choreographed dances.
